Compliments to the chef: students host successful end of term meal
29.07. 2024
Students from the Learn Your Way and Work Your Way programmes this month put on a celebratory end of term event for their peers and staff. The students were involved with the whole process from designing the menu to dressing tables, cooking and serving: pulling off on an incredible meal!
Events such as this help build community partnerships and allow learners to access new industries, with this event being hosted by The Old Bakery Studios and run by Cornwall Hospitality Collective (CHC) and Diversity to Thrive. Opportunities like this allow students to work to their strengths and forge connections for the future, with some individuals being offered work interviews and placements from past events.
The students gained confidence and were given the opportunity to step out of their comfort zone whilst staying in a supported and positive environment. Not only does this allow students to develop their working skills it builds relationships, with students from both Learn Your Way and Work Your Way being involved, bringing together individuals in a supportive working environment.
By involving the students in all stages of planning, preparing and executing a deeper understanding of how the hospitality industry runs was given, with experts from CHC offering advice and tips on how to prepare for a large number of guests. Students were given the option to work in the kitchen or be part of the front of house team depending on their interests- allowing development of specific skills and giving ideas for where their future may lead; perhaps into paid roles or internships within the hospitality industry.
The team in the kitchen made a two course meal of Paella and cheesecake from scratch whilst the front of house team set the tables, made non-alcoholic cocktails and drinks for welcome drinks and served their guests, working together to create an event enjoyed by all!
