Fishing Animateurs
Improving the quality of the catch
Aeron is a Welsh coastal fisher, operating from his 6.9 m vessel, White Pearl. Aeron has a passion for sustainability and fishes using static gear, nets, long-lines and rod and line for Bass. Aeron has a deep concern for the environmental impact of his work, making conscious decisions towards his fishing business with this in mind.
He fishes no further than 6 miles from Bury Port, a small port town in Carmarthenshire, Wales, located on the Loughor Estuary and to the west of Llanelli. The town has been home to a small fishing community pre-dating the industrial revolution. There are still a handful of fishermen that launch from the area and provide local, sustainable catch to the surrounding community and businesses. 1. Therefore, supporting the few fishermen of the port is essential for the continuation of this profession. Aeron secured 80% funding for a project totalling £9,550 through the Welsh Marine and fisheries scheme under the category - 8.4 ‘processing and adding value’ with the help and support of the Fishing Animateurs.
He aims to better his processing facilities by purchasing cool boxes and an ice machine. The proposed cool boxes are insulated and secure, which will also provide better transportation of catch. Keeping the fish cool will help maintain the quality and add value to the product. The purchase of an ice machine will provide fresh ice and reduce fuel expenditure. Currently, Fishers travel to collect ice and have to make multiple trips when delivering catch. Easy access to a constant supply of ice will allow storage of more fish at home, and mean less trips to the market or consumer. The outcome of the project will better the resilience of both businesses, allowing fishing through generations to thrive and continue.
“I would like to say a massive thank you for your help with our applications and support you have given. Without your help regarding everything it might have not been possible due to the difficulty of the forms” Aeron.
